Ready Player One is a science fiction book that is set in the future on earth. Disasters have happened and the earth is kind of in total ruin. The main character, Wade, is a regular boy who lives with his abusive aunt. Wade real life is terrible and he lives in a "building" that is actually a stack of campers, but he almost has a different life in a high tech virtual reality world called the OASIS. The OASIS is where Wade goes to school and meets friends and basically does everything he would do in a normal life. The OASIS is also one huge video game, and Wade loves playing it's games. The man who created the OASIS left a special prize inside the OASIS when he died, and if you win the contest, you inherit the mans company that made the OASIS, his estates, and his fortune of some $240,000,000,000. Wade has found the first part of the contests prize and now he is on a quest to win the rest of the prize.
I thought the book has been interesting so far and it is kind of scary to think of the earth in ruin like it is in this book. The OASIS is a very futuristic item in the story because it shows some major technological advancements humans had made. I thought Wade had a very sad life in the first part of the story, but somehow he managed to power through with a positive attitude and live a "normal" kids life. I think that the OASIS is not good for people because they get addicted to it and spend all their time in it. The peoples addiction to the OASIS made them jump into a virtual world and leave the old one behind to be destroyed. The first part of this book made me anxious to read more.

Over my spring break I did a lot of things. They included sitting at home reading, playing with my dog, going to Wisconsin to see my aunt, sleeping in lots, and watching a lot of March Madness. The first part of my break was spent in my house. I slept in and watched a lot of movies. I also ran around and played with my dog a lot. He likes to chase tennis balls and play with tug toys. I also read a lot and got some new books at Barnes and Noble.
In the second part of spring break, my family went to Oshkosh, Wisconsin, to see my aunt. In Oshkosh, they have a cupcake place that is nationally recognized as one of the best cupcake places in the country. I had 3 cupcakes from that place. The flavors were dreamsicle, shamrock shake, and taste the rainbow (it was skittles flavored and topped with skittles). My favorite one was the shamrock shake because it was a vanilla cake part with mint cream filling and it was topped with like three inches of frosting. Believe it or not there was one last treat on top. It was covered in white chocolate. On one of the days in Wisconsin we went to the Green Bay Zoo and on the way back we stopped at the Packers Stadium. All in all it was a pretty good spring break. 1. In a paragraph or two compare (similarities) and contrast (differences) Night and The Boy in the Striped Pajamas. There are several similarities and several differences between Night and The Boy in the Striped Pajamas. Some similarities are that as the story goes on, the main character learns more and more about the horror they are experiencing that they were both naive to at the beginning of the story. Another similarity is that both main characters witness the violence against the Jews by the Nazis. One last similarity between the stories is that the Holocaust results in a tragedy for both main characters, whether it is losing their whole family or dying themselves. Some differences between the stories is that the main character in The Boy in the Striped Pajamas is not a Jew and the main character from Night is a Jew. Also, the main character from Night loses his whole family, but survives the concentration camps. In The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, it is the opposite because the main character dies and the rest of his family survives. One last difference between the stories is that the main character in Night was always in danger of being killed, while the main character from The Boy in the Striped Pajamas had a pretty nice life because his father was a respected officer in the army. 2. Choose 1 character from Night or one character from Boy in the Striped Pajamas to analyze. Make note (explain) of their physical appearance, character traits, feelings, demeanor, thoughts, etc. Bruno, from The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, is a young boy who is unaware of the horrible things happening around him, partly because his parents hide it from him and lie to him, but partly because he is only 8 years old. He really likes exploring things and reading adventure books. He has dark brown hair and blue eyes. His view on things changes when he meets a young Jewish boy in a concentration camp and he starts to learn more about what is going on around him. He still thinks the concentration camp is just a big game, but he listens to Schmuel's fears and tries to be a good friend. He feels bad for betraying Schmuel and he agrees to help him find his father. In the end, Bruno becomes a great friend at the end of the story. 3. How have your thoughts or understandings of the Holocaust changed since completing this unit (background research, Night, Boy in the Striped Pajamas? I had learned about the Holocaust in school before so none of the things I read or saw surprised me, but I am still really sad every time I learn about the Holocaust and it never stops scaring me that humans would do that to other humans. 4. Which did you like better and why (book or movie)? I liked the book better because I thought it was more realistic to the things that are learned about the Holocaust in school. It always had you wondering what was going to happen next and shuddering with horror about how the Jews were treated, so it was really well written. 5. Any final thoughts or questions you have regarding either the book, movie, or Holocaust in general? I thought the book and the movie had really sad endings, so they didn't end like a fairy tale and it shows that the Holocaust was terrible and happy endings didn't exist for a lot of people. The stories were good, but they were sad. Words of the Wiser: Page 78
When Elie is in the infirmary, he is happy because conditions are better than in the regular parts of the concentration camp and things are easier. Then he is warned by a Hungarian Jew that he is almost in a greater danger in the infirmary than in the regular camp because there are more "selections" in the infirmary and more people die. He warns Elie to keep his guard up and try to stay healthy. The life lesson in this is that Elie learns to stay attentive even if there seems to be no danger. This could affect Elie's life by saving it from a selection he was not ready for. Tough questions: Page 110 When Elie is given advice by the leader of his block to let his father die and take his father's ration, Elie is faced with his hungry body telling him to abandon his father, but there is still a part of him that wants to help his father until the end. Elie is faced with the tough question of do I abandon by own father or do I help him and lower my chances of survival. This makes me think about how much Elie must have loved his father to stay with him until the end, even though it put Elie in a worse situation. Memory Moment: Page 100 When Elie remembers seeing the men fighting for the crumbs of bread and killing each other for scraps of food, it triggers a memory of later in his life. He was on a ship when A rich lady was throwing coins to the "natives" and the natives would fight over the coins. Elie sees two kids strangling each other trying to get a coin so he asks the woman to stop throwing coins because he does not like that the lady takes pleasure in watching the children fight over the coins while the children almost kill each other. This memory might be important because it reminded the author of those who had imprisoned him and took pleasure in watching people fight each other to the death for a little bit of something. If I was President of the United States, the first thing I would try achieve would be making college affordable, because education is a very important part of success in life. We need people to go to school to become lawyers, scientists, engineers, teachers, and many other jobs that fuel advances in the country. If college is costing to much, we won't have enough educated people who can do the necessary things to help build the country. We need to work harder than other nations that are competitive with us and we need to outwork other nations in the education area. I would achieve this by introducing laws that made our education standard higher and push children to aim higher with their goals in life. Then, I would introduce another law that would lower college tuition while diverting government money from other places to the colleges so college will be more affordable for everyone.
The second thing I would do if I was president would be passing a law to make there more free trade so there could be more of a flowing economy with lots of goods being exported, which would boost overall production, and with more goods being produced, there will be more jobs that will be needed by people, and that will lower the unemployment rate. This is important to do because it makes the country stronger and it can be accomplished by passing a law allowing free trade. The third thing I would do would be talking to other world leaders and making alliances with them so that there will be more peace and everything thing works better when people get along. It is really important to have peace in the world so things can work. I could do this by arranging meeting with the leaders of different nations. These are the first three things I would do if I was President of the United States. Over Winter Break I stayed at my house the whole time, but it was good to relax and not have to go to school. At the start of my break my aunt and cousin come to our house and we did some fun stuff and stayed up late watching movies and talking. Then we had Christmas with them and the day after Christmas they left and we got a dog that we would be watching for the rest of break. That was the first part of my Winter Break.
In the second part of my Winter Break I was watching a puppy for some friends while they were gone. My dog enjoyed the other dog for a while but he got really grumpy and jealous when he realized the other dog was stealing all the attention from him. I stayed up really late on New Years Eve and watched a movie. Then two days later, my family and I went over to my Grandpa's house to watch the Iowa football game. After that my break really wound down and then school started again. So that was what I did over Winter Break! The article is a very good indicater if teens are ready to go out into the real word and become adults. Some of these life skills, like coping with problems and talking to strangers, are necessary to survive in the world. This article shows whether teens can be responsible, safe, and smart in real world situations. I think these skills are necessary for teens to become good adults.
I think these life skills are realistic for teens and I believe everyone should meet these goals because these are basic life skills and they can be learned fairly easily. I also think I can meet these goals by 18 and I think I already have some down. Maybe it is only one or two, but I think I can reach these goals in 5 years. If I lived in video game I would live in Star Wars Battlefront because I love Star Wars and I would spend the whole time flying around in a starship. (A Firespray model if I had a choice) Most of the time uessthough, I would be out exploring the world I dreamed of being part of as a kid. Maybe I would make mysely be a jedi because it would be cool to be so agile that I could stand on beams an inch wide or jump 12 feet straight up. I guess I would just kind of roam around and have fun.
One of the best parts of being in the game for me would be visiting Hoth, the ice world, and maybe I would build a snow castle to live in. I guess the con of living on Hoth would be that I would have no company because nobody lives on Hoth. So I guess my main reason for choosing Battlefront to live in would be to explore my childhood dream land. Some of the things I am thankful are my family, sports, my dog, and living in a country where you can speak your mind. These are things I am thankful for because these things are what make my life fun. These things also are what shape my personality, so that is another reason why I am thankful for them. Here are some more specific details about what I mean.
My family is always there for me and if you didn't have anybody to be with you and learn from, you would be lost and lonely, which nobody wants to be, so that is why I am thankful for my family. I am thankful for sports because they are basically my life and are always ready to make sure I am not bored. Next, there is my faithful friend always at my side trying to make me happy. He is my dog and I really think he is always on a mission to make people smile. I am thankful for him because he is always that thing that will cheer you up when you need it. The final thing I am thankful for is pretty simple. I am thankful to have the right to be able to express my opinion and say what I want... to some degree. It is a freedom a really enjoy using and it would be hard to live without it. Picture of my dog |
