Reading Understanding Reflection For Trimester 2
I have chosen to reflect on how I grew in my understanding of identifying the signposts in non fiction as a reading strategy to help me understand the article. The artifact above this reflection shows my annotations of signposts early in the trimester and the artifact below this reflection shows the growth I had over the trimester to the annotations I was able to make at the end. I grew in my understanding of identifying and making meaning of signposts in non fiction by making better annotations that answered the signpost question instead of just explaining why I thought the piece I had identified was a signpost. An example of my growth in the two articles would be that in the first one, I wrote, "It surprised me that more women's works are being published more than in history while diverse books have not seen much of an increase in publishing in the US." This signpost just repeats what the author just said and identified that it surprised me. In the second article though, I wrote, "It surprises me that a mother would teach her children to observe people of a different race to judge them because it makes me feel like this distrust that we teach our children to have of people who are different than them just fuels the bias we are trying to eliminate. Judging a group of people because of their race will not solve the problems we have." This second annotation has much greater detail than the first, and it also expands on what the author put down to provoke thoughts and show what I was thinking after reading what surprised me. A second way I grew in my skills of the identification and understanding of signposts was I added more kinds of signposts I could identify and I identified more signposts overall in non fiction. An example of this growth would be that in the first article, I only had 3 different types of annotations and 10 total annotations over 6 pages. However in the second article, I had 7 different types of annotations and 12 total annotations over just 3 pages. These two artifacts that I have chosen are great examples of my growth because they show how the quality and quantity of my annotations grew over the trimester.

Independent Reading Reflection For Trimester 2
During this trimester, I had a lot more homework than first trimester so it was hard to find time to read sometimes. I wanted to read more, but sometimes things don't work out the way you want them to. I still love independent reading and I also think I grew in my reading this trimester. An example of how I grew would be that after our diverse books unit, I picked up a book about an Indian boy who lives on the streets trying to find his family. This surprised me that I had picked up a diverse book because I had not done that a lot in the past. In the next trimester, I would like to push myself to read more and I will also be focusing on getting a book that I want read that I haven't had time to pick up so far. I think I can read more than did this trimester if I work hard to find time in my schedule for free reading. The list of book above this reflection is the books I read this trimester and I would highly recommend all of them.

Writing Understanding Reflection for Trimester 2
I have chosen to reflect on how I grew in the understanding of I can write a presentation. The artifacts I chose, my Poetry Portfolio and my Prose Poetry script, are both examples of my growth in making a good presentation. (These artifacts are above and below this reflection) I don't feel like either of these artifacts represent when I struggled to create a good presentation, but I chose them because they both have their own parts that show different areas of growth I had over the trimester. Over the trimester I grew in my understanding of organizing a presentation logically, and I think that my prose poetry script is a good example of that because I had to look at poetry and my book and find a connection between the two. I think I did a good job of finding the yearning for freedom and the feeling of being trapped as reoccurring concepts in my book, and then finding a poem that also conveyed those feelings. The way I could picture my character in the book and the trapped bird in the poem as almost one person helped me grow in organizing my presentation logically by weaving the poem into my prose and keeping a smooth flow of the same concepts throughout my script. The Prose Poetry script shows my growth because it is an example of how I was able to identify the concepts in my prose and connect that to what kind of poetry I needed to make the presentation logical and smooth. I think that my Poetry Portfolio is an example of how I grew in my understanding of writing a presentation by showing that I can craft a presentation with an authentic voice. My Poetry Portfolio is a great example of this understanding because I was able to create five different kinds of poems by myself and each one had a different meaning to it that I had come up with. I also used poetry devices throughout it. At the beginning of the poetry unit, I thought poetry was just making rhymes and that I would never like it. My haiku is an authentic example of my growth because I was able to find an inspiration from my pride for my home state and I was able to write a creative piece of poetry about it. All of my poems in my portfolio are examples of how I grew in my understanding of writing poetry because they show my use of my own authentic ideas and my application of the poetry devices I had learned about. I think that both artifacts I chose are good examples of how I grew in my understanding of writing a presentation by including meaningful content. I grew in my understanding of using meaningful content by realizing that there is more than words that make up a presentation. If I had been asked to make a presentation at the beginning of the trimester, I would have just put some words on a Google Slides template and been fine with it. My Poetry Portfolio shows my growth in including meaningful content because I used different fonts, word colors, and background images to make the portfolio have more meaning. This shows my growth in understanding how to use meaningful content to convey feelings or set the mood for a presentation. My Prose Poetry script also shows my growth in the understanding of using meaningful content to convey the main idea I am trying to get across. It shows my growth because I really had to understand both my book and the poetry I chose to convey the main idea in my presentation. My realization that I came away with after this trimester was that I could use meaningful content to make my presentations better. Those are the reasons that I think my Poetry Portfolio and my Prose Poetry script are good examples of my growth in my understanding of how to write a good presentation by organizing the presentation logically, crafting the presentation with an authentic voice, and including meaningful content.

Speaking Understanding Reflection
I have chosen to reflect on how I grew in my understanding of I can deliver a presentation effectively. I have chosen my Poetry Out Loud rubric and my Prose Poetry Presentation as artifacts to demonstrate this understanding. When I did my first speaking assignment on the Prose Poetry Presentation, the recording shows I was just reading off the page and my voice had no life to it. I was missing several key elements of a good presentation. My voice was to monotone to set the mood and I didn't do a good job of conveying the idea I was trying to get to the audience. However, I showed growth in my Poetry Out Loud piece and I think I grew in the understanding of giving a good speaking presentation. I practiced a lot before my Poetry Out Loud presentation, and I was able to grow in the areas of the expression in my voice and my articulation of words while presenting. I also know that I grew in my understanding of delivering a presentation because I felt much more confident at the end of the trimester than at the beginning. I think that these two artifacts are a good demonstration of my growth over trimester 2 because I received higher marks on the Poetry Out Loud rubric in areas where I lacked polished speech tools during the Prose Poetry Presentation, and I had definitely improved my understanding of what I needed to do to have a successful presentation by using better voice expression and word articulation .

Participation Reflection
I think I did a better job of participating in class discussions this trimester, but there were still a few that I did not participate in. I thought I participated in all the discussions that we had about implicit bias well, and I also think that when I do speak in class, my words are well thought out before I say them. I think I did a good job of respectfully listening to my peers when they were talking and I never interrupted anybody. During the Diverse Books unit, I thought I was a good leader in my group and I provided good ideas and constructive criticism for others. I also was a leader in all of our small group discussions during that unit and I encouraged others to get their work done. I asked questions when I needed help or needed something clarified and I always had my materials and homework ready for class. My goal for next trimester will be to participate in all classroom discussions. That is why I gave myself the marks I did on my participation sheet.
